An alarming Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as reported by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. Health officials in Uganda have since disclosed that the virus has crossed the border, with one confirmed case identified in the capital, Kampala. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 246 suspected cases and 65 fatalities, primarily concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. This outbreak, now recognized as one of the ten largest in history, marks the 17th time the DRC has faced an Ebola crisis since the virus was first identified in 1976. In a significant twist, preliminary lab results indicate that this outbreak may not be linked to the Zaire Ebola virus strain, which has been the cause of most previous outbreaks in the region. Ongoing genetic sequencing is expected to clarify the strain responsible for the current cases. There are four known strains of Ebola that can infect humans, with three—Zaire, Sudan, and Bundibugyo—having caused major outbreaks. According to an early report by Reuters, the case in Uganda has been associated with the Bundibugyo strain. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, a leading Congolese virologist and co-discoverer of the Ebola virus, expressed concerns that the emergence of a different strain could complicate response efforts, especially since existing vaccines and treatments have been developed specifically for the Zaire strain.
