Duolingo's CEO says AI misses what his best designers nail

Luis von Ahn, the CEO of Duolingo, recently discussed the limitations of artificial intelligence in creative fields during an episode of the 'Rapid Response' podcast. He emphasized that while his team is eager to integrate AI into their processes, the company is committed to maintaining high standards of quality in their offerings. Von Ahn remarked, "For certain tasks, AI has come a long way and can deliver impressive results. However, there are areas where it simply does not meet our expectations." He specifically pointed out the challenges AI faces in design work, noting, "We employ many talented artists and designers who contribute significantly to the aesthetic quality of our app. At this point, AI has not demonstrated the same level of creativity or refinement that our top professionals achieve." Despite Duolingo's enthusiasm for AI, the CEO acknowledged a previous initiative that aimed to assess employee performance based on their AI usage. This approach was later reconsidered, as von Ahn recognized that it encouraged unnecessary dependence on AI in certain contexts. "I realized that this policy was misguided," he stated. "While many of our team members benefit from AI tools, there are specific projects where such technology is not advantageous. Therefore, we have decided to eliminate that evaluation criterion." AI's influence is expanding across various creative sectors, with many companies incorporating it into their design and marketing strategies. Brands like Kate Spade and Tapestry, the parent company of Coach, have already begun to blend AI into their design processes, highlighting the ongoing evolution of technology in the creative industry.
