Duolingo is now giving users access to advanced learning content

On Wednesday, Duolingo revealed a significant expansion of its language learning offerings by providing free access to advanced materials across nine languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. This advanced content is designed for learners at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognized standard for language proficiency. The B2 level focuses on complex learning scenarios, specialized vocabulary, and learning materials that do not rely on translations. Among the new features are "Advanced Stories," which enhance reading comprehension, and DuoRadio, an audio experience that aids in listening skills. With these resources now available at no cost, Duolingo users can enhance their language proficiency, preparing for job interviews, study abroad programs, or engaging with intricate media such as news articles and films. Duolingo claims it is the only free app to provide such advanced-level content in these nine languages. In contrast, competitors like Babbel and Busuu typically require paid subscriptions for access to similar advanced courses. For example, while Busuu offers B2 level courses, the free version is limited in scope, requiring users to pay for comprehensive access. Previously, Duolingo's offerings were primarily limited to A2 or B1 levels, focusing on basic communication skills. The company is now framing this free advanced learning opportunity as a valuable resource for job seekers, highlighting the importance of language skills in a competitive global job market. Research from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages indicates that being bilingual can enhance employability by as much as 50%. "Achieving job-ready proficiency in a new language was once a challenge for many, often requiring costly classes or immersive experiences that weren't accessible to everyone," stated Bozena Pajak, head of learning science at Duolingo. This strategic move to offer advanced learning at no charge aims to bolster Duolingo's free user base, which has grown significantly, reaching 52.7 million daily active users, up 30% from the previous year. However, it is worth noting that the company’s stock saw a decline following projections of a slight decrease in bookings growth for Q2 2026.
