Duolingo has made a significant announcement, revealing that users can now access advanced language learning materials at no cost, spanning nine languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. This new feature is available on web, iOS, and Android platforms. The advanced content is categorized at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an internationally recognized standard for language proficiency. B2 level materials focus on complex scenarios and specialized vocabulary, omitting translations to enhance learning. Among the new offerings are features like “Advanced Stories,” designed to improve reading comprehension, and DuoRadio, an audio experience that aids listening skills. With this initiative, Duolingo aims to empower users to enhance their language capabilities, whether for job interviews, academic pursuits abroad, or navigating intricate literature and media without relying on translations. Duolingo positions itself as a unique platform, being the only free app providing advanced-level learning in these languages. In contrast, competitors such as Babbel and Busuu typically require paid subscriptions for their advanced courses. For example, while Busuu offers some CEFR-aligned content up to the B2 level, their free version is limited and lacks comprehensive resources like grammar explanations, necessitating a paid plan for full access. Previously, Duolingo's free offerings were capped at the A2 or B1 levels, focusing primarily on basic communication skills. By providing free access to advanced learning, Duolingo is appealing to job seekers, emphasizing language proficiency as a valuable asset in today’s competitive job market. Research indicates that mastering a second language can boost employability by up to 50%. Bozena Pajak, Duolingo's head of learning science, highlighted the transformative impact of this offering, stating, "Reaching job-ready proficiency in a new language used to be out of reach for most people." She noted that it typically required years of costly classes or immersion experiences that weren't accessible to all. The initiative also serves as a strategic move to grow Duolingo's free user base. The company reported 52.7 million daily active users in its Q4 earnings, marking a 30% increase from the previous year, which surpasses its paid subscriber count of 12.2 million. However, Duolingo's stock experienced a decline after it forecasted a slight dip in the year-over-year bookings growth rate for Q2 2026.
