Duna, a startup focused on business identity verification, has successfully raised €30 million in a Series A funding round, making it one of the most well-financed companies emerging from the influential network of former Stripe employees, often referred to as the "Stripe mafia." This latest funding round was spearheaded by CapitalG, Alphabet’s growth fund, which has been a long-time supporter of Stripe since its Series D funding in 2016. Founded by ex-Stripe employees Duco Van Lanschot and David Schreiber, Duna operates from Germany and the Netherlands and aims to streamline the onboarding process for fintech companies. The startup is already helping clients like Plaid reduce the common challenges associated with business identity checks and fraud prevention. Although Stripe is not a client of Duna, Van Lanschot emphasizes that executives from both Stripe and its competitor Adyen recognize the significant opportunity Duna is tackling. Duna's vision extends beyond mere verification; the company aspires to create a global trust infrastructure, akin to a digital passport for businesses. Van Lanschot envisions a future where companies can conveniently reuse their verified identity information across various platforms, facilitating processes like opening bank accounts or onboarding with other service providers. The investment from CapitalG’s Alex Nichols highlights the unique network effects and insights that Duna brings to the table. Nichols appreciates the startup's approach of generating its own data instead of relying on existing, often inadequate, data sources. Duna is not without competition, facing rivals like Jumio and Veriff in the Know Your Business (KYB) sector, yet its innovative strategy sets it apart. Duna has already proven its business model by enabling quicker and more cost-effective onboarding for corporate clients. Existing investors, including Index Ventures and Puzzle Ventures, have expressed confidence in Duna’s potential, leading them to participate in this recent funding round. The startup is strategically identifying clusters of businesses that share overlapping interests, enabling immediate value creation even before achieving full network effects. As Duna advances toward its ambitious goal of establishing a comprehensive identity network, it aims to leverage AI automation to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. This positions Duna to potentially transform business onboarding processes, similar to how Amazon revolutionized consumer checkout with its one-click feature. The influence of Stripe continues to loom large, even as Duna carves its own path in the identity verification landscape.
