The creative minds behind one of Netflix's most popular series, "Stranger Things," are reportedly making a significant move. Recent reports from major entertainment outlets indicate that Matt and Ross Duffer, the sibling duo responsible for the hit show, are negotiating an exclusive agreement with Paramount, which is now part of David Ellison's Skydance. On Friday, industry insider Matthew Belloni from Puck revealed that the Duffers have indeed made their decision to transition to Paramount. Their ambition has seemingly grown with each successive season of "Stranger Things," marked by longer episodes, increasingly elaborate set designs, and escalating budgets, with Season 4 reportedly costing around $30 million per episode. With this shift, the Duffers are setting their sights on creating large-scale blockbuster films—an area where Netflix has faced challenges, particularly due to its complicated relationship with traditional theatrical releases. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has previously characterized the theatrical model as outdated. Although Netflix does release films in cinemas, the streaming giant has been reluctant to provide a substantial exclusive window for theatrical showings before making them available for streaming, leading to limited exposure in major theater chains. This issue became particularly relevant in discussions surrounding director Greta Gerwig's upcoming “Narnia” movies, which are set to screen exclusively in IMAX for two weeks before their streaming debut on Christmas Day 2026. It appears that the Duffer Brothers also valued this theatrical aspect, with reports suggesting that it was a crucial factor in their negotiations. While the Duffers' departure may not be felt immediately, Netflix is poised to release the final season of "Stranger Things" in three parts later this year. Additionally, the Duffers have two new series in the pipeline set to premiere in 2026. The "Stranger Things" franchise continues to expand, with a Broadway prequel already showcasing its influence, alongside an animated series and a live-action spinoff reportedly in development.
