Great handling, advanced EV tech: We drive the 2026 BMW iX3

The 2026 BMW iX3 marks a significant milestone for the iconic automaker as it introduces the Neue Klasse series, reminiscent of the models that shaped the brand during the 1960s. This new crossover not only showcases BMW's commitment to innovation but also represents a shift towards fully electric vehicles, embodying cutting-edge technology and design. The iX3 is a remarkable blend of advanced engineering and modern aesthetics. It features a fully electric powertrain, a leap forward from the automotive past, with technology so advanced that it would astonish drivers of classic models like the 1962 BMW 1500. As part of BMW's ambitious plans, the iX3 is just the beginning; an all-electric version of the 3 Series sedan is also in development, promising to delight enthusiasts, especially in its M-tuned variant set to debut in early 2026. In response to market trends favoring crossovers and SUVs, BMW has prioritized the iX3 for its initial release. Sustainability has been a core focus in its design, utilizing recycled materials for battery components, interior plastics, and aluminum. The company has adopted a monomaterial strategy where feasible, simplifying the vehicle’s recycling process. Under the hood, the iX3 is powered by BMW's sixth-generation electric powertrain. The launch model, the iX3 50 xDrive, is equipped with an asynchronous motor at the front and an electrically excited synchronous motor at the rear, delivering an impressive 463 horsepower (345 kW) and 475 lb-ft (645 Nm) of torque. This power is harnessed from a robust 108.7-kWh (net) lithium-ion battery pack operating at 800 volts. A key innovation in the iX3’s design is the transition from the pouch cell/module approach of previous generation EVs to new cylindrical cells measuring 46 mm by 95 mm. This cell-to-pack design not only reduces weight but also lowers assembly costs. Notably, the battery pack serves as the vehicle's floor, with seats mounted directly onto it, further optimizing space and weight efficiency within the cabin.
