Sierra’s Dream Chaser is starting to resemble a nightmare

The Dream Chaser spaceplane, under development for the past two decades, appears to be facing significant delays in its journey to space. Recently, NASA confirmed that the initial flight of this innovative winged spacecraft will not include a docking with the International Space Station (ISS), as previously planned. Instead, the space agency announced that a free flight demonstration would be more beneficial for the program's future. Dana Weigel, manager of NASA's ISS Program, explained in a news release that creating new space transportation systems presents numerous challenges, often extending timelines beyond initial expectations. With the ISS projected to deorbit by 2030, this decision allows for continued testing and validation of the Dream Chaser, showcasing its potential for future cargo resupply missions in low Earth orbit. The Dream Chaser's development journey began in 2004 when SpaceDev, a U.S. company, revived NASA's HL-20 spaceplane concept. After acquiring SpaceDev in 2008, Sierra Nevada Corporation secured $362 million in NASA contracts aimed at developing crewed transportation for the ISS. Although it ultimately lost the Commercial Crew competition to Boeing and SpaceX, a cargo variant of Dream Chaser was integrated into a program for resupplying the space station in 2016. Under its contract, Sierra Space has been guaranteed at least seven flights to the ISS, part of a broader $14 billion agreement for multiple supply missions shared with SpaceX and Northrop Grumman. However, a NASA representative did not disclose the financial specifics regarding the funding allocated to Sierra for the Dream Chaser’s cargo version.
