DoorDash launches a new ‘Tasks’ app that pays couriers to submit videos to train AI

DoorDash has introduced a groundbreaking standalone app called "Tasks," enabling its delivery couriers to earn money by participating in activities designed to enhance artificial intelligence and robotic systems. Couriers can now complete assignments such as filming their daily tasks or recording themselves speaking different languages, with DoorDash emphasizing that the compensation for these tasks is displayed upfront, reflecting the complexity and effort involved. According to a blog post from the company, the original audio and video captured by workers will be utilized to improve both DoorDash's internal AI models and those created by its partners across various industries, including retail, insurance, hospitality, and technology. For instance, one task requires a courier to film themselves washing dishes while wearing a body camera, ensuring each clean dish is clearly visible before moving on to the next. DoorDash is not alone in leveraging its delivery workforce for AI development. Last year, Uber announced similar initiatives, allowing drivers to earn additional income through small tasks, such as uploading photos to assist in AI training. In addition to the new Tasks app, couriers will notice new digital tasks within the existing Dasher app. These tasks include capturing authentic photos of restaurant menus or hotel entrances to facilitate easier drop-off locations for delivery drivers. The app also highlights DoorDash's collaboration with Waymo, where couriers are compensated for tasks such as closing the doors of self-driving vehicles. Ethan Beatty, General Manager of DoorDash Tasks, explained, "The goal of Tasks is to provide businesses with a clearer understanding of on-ground activities and to gather fresh insights, all while offering Dashers a flexible earning opportunity. With over 8 million Dashers capable of reaching nearly any location in the U.S., this initiative empowers them to digitize the physical world." Currently, the in-app Tasks and the standalone Tasks app are available in select U.S. locations, excluding California, New York City, Seattle, and Colorado, with plans for future expansion into more task types and international markets.
