In a significant leap towards automation, DoorDash has introduced a new delivery robot named Dot, which is designed to traverse busy streets, parking lots, and sidewalks to deliver food directly to customers. This initiative represents the company's first dedicated venture into autonomous vehicle technology. Previously, DoorDash explored options like drone delivery and collaborated with Coco Robotics, a startup supported by Sam Altman, to enhance sidewalk delivery. According to Stanley Tang, co-founder of DoorDash and head of the automation and robotics unit, the growing complexity of delivery logistics necessitates a move towards autonomous solutions. Tang emphasized that existing technologies were inadequate for their specific needs. Dot can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour and is capable of carrying up to six pizza boxes or a total of 30 pounds of goods. The rise of autonomous delivery systems has become increasingly prevalent, with Uber recently announcing a partnership with Israeli drone company Flytrex and previously utilizing self-driving vehicles from Waymo for food deliveries. Currently, DoorDash is piloting Dot in Phoenix, with future plans to extend its reach to other urban areas. The robot is part of DoorDash's new autonomous delivery platform, which also includes drone delivery options where feasible. Equipped with eight cameras and three lidar sensors, Dot expertly navigates challenging road environments, including congested parking lots and obstructed bike lanes. Additionally, an internal camera helps maintain food quality during transit. To further enhance the delivery experience, DoorDash has introduced a smart scale feature that can weigh orders and identify missing items. The company reports that this innovation has led to a 30% reduction in complaints regarding missing items, showcasing the potential for Dot to improve customer satisfaction significantly.
