Dolby Laboratories has officially launched Dolby Vision 2, marking a significant advancement in high dynamic range (HDR) technology for visual content. Hisense has announced it will be the first television manufacturer to incorporate this upgrade into its premium models, while French media powerhouse CANAL+ has pledged to support the new format across its extensive programming lineup. Building upon the original Dolby Vision standard, which has been in use for over ten years, Dolby Vision 2 is crafted to leverage the capabilities of modern television hardware. Key enhancements include a newly designed image engine and a suite of AI-driven tools branded as "Content Intelligence." These tools are designed to automatically optimize picture quality based on the specific content being viewed and the surrounding environment of the viewer. Among the standout features are "Precision Black," which improves visibility in darker scenes, and "Light Sense," which utilizes ambient light detection and reference data for picture fine-tuning. Additionally, Dolby Vision 2 offers tailored optimizations for live sports and gaming experiences. The upgrade also introduces bi-directional tone mapping, which maximizes the brightness and color spectrum of newer displays, alongside a feature called "Authentic Motion," granting creators enhanced control over motion rendering. The new standard will be available in two tiers: the basic version, which provides essential upgrades for mainstream televisions, and Dolby Vision 2 Max, specifically designed for high-end displays, offering advanced features to fully utilize their potential. Hisense plans to integrate this technology into forthcoming models powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic 800 chip, which includes support for Dolby Vision 2, with further availability details to be announced later. In tandem, CANAL+ is set to deliver films, television series, and live sports in Dolby Vision 2 as part of its effort to elevate its broadcast offerings. Dolby emphasizes that this new standard aims not only to enhance the viewing experience for consumers but also to provide content creators with greater flexibility in showcasing their work.
