OpenAI and Anthropic studied how people use ChatGPT and Claude. One big difference emerged.

This week, OpenAI and Anthropic unveiled detailed studies examining user interactions with their AI models, ChatGPT and Claude. The results highlight distinct usage trends: ChatGPT is predominantly seen as a tool for augmentation, whereas Claude is more focused on automation. According to OpenAI's research, ChatGPT is frequently utilized for a variety of tasks including writing, editing, summarization, and brainstorming. It has become a go-to resource for students, marketers, and professionals who rely on it for drafting essays, preparing reports, and generating campaign ideas. Educators also leverage ChatGPT for creating quizzes, providing tutoring, and simplifying complex subjects. The study categorized user interactions into three types: "Doing" conversations that produce outputs ready for production processes; "Asking" chats that assist with decision-making without generating direct outputs; and "Expressing" which encompasses other varied uses. Notably, OpenAI's findings from late June indicated a significant prevalence of Asking interactions. Conversely, Anthropic's analysis reveals that Claude is leaning more towards software development and enterprise automation, with coding and math-related tasks comprising over a third of its usage. Businesses are integrating Claude into their workflows for tasks such as document processing, report generation, and bulk coding. This latest study from Anthropic marks the third in a series and is notable for being the first instance where automation usage surpassed augmentation. Currently, ChatGPT excels in enhancing individual productivity, allowing users to collaborate and iterate on tasks. In contrast, Claude is becoming synonymous with workplace efficiency, as enterprises increasingly assign entire tasks to it. Looking ahead, it seems likely that organizations may utilize both models: ChatGPT for creativity and communication, while relying on Claude for structured, large-scale execution.
