
Recent investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have revealed that distraction likely played a significant role in two deadly crashes in early 2024 involving Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving technology. The NTSB disclosed its findings on Wednesday, announcing plans for a public hearing on March 31 in Washington D.C. to address these incidents and potentially issue recommendations for Ford. The NTSB, an independent federal agency that investigates transportation accidents, is currently conducting a thorough examination of the crashes, which have also attracted the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA's own investigation suggested that BlueCruise has limitations, particularly in detecting stationary vehicles under certain conditions. As part of its inquiry, the NHTSA sent Ford a detailed list of questions, which the automaker responded to in August 2025. Ford has consistently emphasized that BlueCruise is intended as a convenience feature, requiring drivers to remain vigilant and ready to regain control of the vehicle at any moment. The company has made it clear that the system is not designed as a crash warning or avoidance mechanism. New Ford vehicle owners can opt for BlueCruise with a one-time payment of $2,495 or an annual subscription of $495. The NTSB's investigation and upcoming hearing are poised to shed light on how automakers like Ford communicate the purpose and limitations of driver assistance technologies. This concern is echoed by previous investigations into other driver-assistance systems, such as Tesla’s Autopilot, which also raised issues related to distracted driving. The first of the two fatal incidents occurred in February 2024 in San Antonio, Texas, where a driver operating a 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E rear-ended a stationary Honda CR-V at a speed of 74 mph. The driver suffered minor injuries, while the occupant of the Honda was killed. NTSB records indicate that the driver was focused on the vehicle’s infotainment screen just moments before the crash, receiving multiple alerts to pay attention to the road. In another tragic event in March 2024 in Philadelphia, a 23-year-old woman driving a 2022 Mach-E collided with two parked vehicles, resulting in the deaths of both drivers. The woman, identified as Dimple Patel, was intoxicated at the time and was later charged with DUI homicide. Despite the driver monitoring system indicating her eyes were on the road, a photograph taken shortly before the crash appears to show her holding a phone, raising questions about the effectiveness of the monitoring technology. The NTSB's reports highlight concerns regarding the limitations of Ford's driver assistance systems. Notably, no automated braking was engaged in either crash, emphasizing the need for drivers to maintain full attention while using these technologies. Ford's ongoing discussions with the NTSB about the operational challenges associated with the technology may lead to further developments in safety recommendations for the industry.
