The Walt Disney Company has recently made headlines by entering into a $1 billion licensing agreement with OpenAI, granting access to over 200 of its beloved characters for the creation of AI-generated images and videos. However, this partnership is now overshadowed by a serious dispute with Google. According to a report from Variety, Disney has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Google, demanding an immediate halt to the use of its characters in AI content creation through platforms such as Veo, Imagen, and Nano Banana. The company's legal team has accused Google of significant copyright violations, claiming that its Gemini AI system is utilizing a wide array of Disney characters from famous franchises including Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, without proper authorization. The cease-and-desist letter reportedly includes examples of Gemini-generated AI figures featuring characters like Deadpool and Elsa from Frozen. In response to this situation, Disney and Google have engaged in informal discussions aimed at resolving the conflict. Despite these talks, Google's Gemini continues to produce AI imagery featuring Disney characters. A spokesperson for Google stated that their AI builds on publicly available data from the internet and emphasized the implementation of innovative copyright controls to protect creators' rights. Currently, Disney’s letter does not threaten immediate legal action but serves as a warning to Google and other AI companies, including Meta and Midjourney, regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted material. Meanwhile, Disney remains open to collaborating with AI firms like OpenAI under a paid licensing framework, signaling a clear distinction between partnership and unauthorized use of its content.
