Disney brings iconic characters to OpenAI's Sora AI videos: What's restricted

Walt Disney Co. has entered into a groundbreaking three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI, announced on Thursday. This deal allows the iconic animated characters of Disney, ranging from Mickey Mouse to Simba, to be featured in AI-generated videos on the Sora platform. In addition to this collaboration, Disney has made a significant one-billion-dollar equity investment in OpenAI, marking a pivotal move for the entertainment giant into the realm of generative media. With this partnership, Sora will have access to a vast library of over 200 Disney characters. Users will be able to prompt the AI model to create videos starring some of the studio’s most beloved figures, from timeless icons like Cinderella to contemporary favorites such as Lilo and Stitch. This initiative not only expands Sora’s creative capabilities but also integrates with Disney’s existing products. Curated Sora videos are set to be showcased on Disney’s streaming platforms, while ChatGPT will be utilized internally to support Disney employees. However, there are limitations in place. Although Disney characters are licensed for use, their associated actors are not included in the agreement. This means that any appearances by characters like Woody from Toy Story will not feature Tom Hanks’s distinctive voice. Disney has stressed that protective measures are embedded within the deal to ensure that characters are not utilized in ways that could compromise their integrity or infringe upon the rights of creators. The agreement does not permit OpenAI to use Disney films or television content for training its models, a significant point of contention between Hollywood and AI firms. Disney's recent cease-and-desist notice to Google over alleged unauthorized training underscores the sensitivity of this issue. Disney CEO Bob Iger has portrayed the agreement as a forward-thinking initiative that aims to explore new storytelling avenues powered by AI, while still prioritizing the safeguarding of intellectual property and the creative contributions of its teams. He described Sora as a 'safe environment' for the responsible use of Disney characters. This collaboration mirrors Disney’s previous partnership with Epic Games, where characters have appeared in Fortnite and other upcoming entertainment experiences. By investing heavily in OpenAI, Disney signals its belief in generative AI as a key driver of future innovation. Nonetheless, creative guilds have expressed skepticism. The Writers Guild of America has criticized the partnership, arguing that AI companies have previously trained on its members' work without consent, and that Disney’s involvement may inadvertently endorse such practices. As some record labels and media companies begin to forge commercial AI agreements, the industry remains embroiled in legal disputes, highlighting the ongoing struggle to balance innovation with content protection. Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to start generating videos featuring Disney characters by early 2026, potentially transforming how fans engage with Disney's storytelling universe.
