Disney is investing $1 billion in OpenAI and licensing its characters for Sora

Disney has announced a significant investment of $1 billion in OpenAI, marking a pivotal partnership that allows the entertainment giant's beloved characters to be featured on Sora, an innovative video generation platform developed by OpenAI. This deal represents the first major licensing agreement for the Sora platform. Under the terms of this collaboration, users of OpenAI’s Sora will gain the opportunity to create videos featuring over 200 iconic Disney animated characters. Fans can expect to see familiar faces like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Disney Princesses such as Ariel and Cinderella, as well as characters from popular franchises like Frozen, Moana, and Toy Story. Additionally, characters from Marvel and Lucasfilm, including Black Panther and figures from Star Wars like Yoda, will also be available. However, the agreement specifically excludes the use of talent likenesses or voiceovers. Moreover, users of OpenAI's renowned chatbot, ChatGPT, will be able to request the creation of images that incorporate Disney’s characters, further enhancing the interactive experience. Disney CEO Robert A. Iger emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry. Through this collaboration with OpenAI, we aim to thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling via generative AI while safeguarding the rights of creators and their works." Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, echoed this sentiment, noting, "Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner with them to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand how people create and experience exceptional content. This agreement demonstrates how AI companies and creative leaders can collaborate responsibly to foster innovation that benefits society and respects the essence of creativity." This new partnership comes amidst Disney's previous legal actions against AI companies for perceived infringements of its intellectual property, including a lawsuit against Midjourney for copyright violations. As this story unfolds, further updates are expected.
