Disney+ is rolling out its TikTok-like ‘Verts’ short-form video feed

Disney+ has begun the rollout of Verts, an exciting new short-form video feature for users in the U.S. via its mobile application. Initially unveiled in January, this TikTok-inspired feed showcases captivating scenes and highlights from a wide array of movies and TV series available on the platform. In response to the growing popularity of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, Verts aims to enhance daily user engagement while allowing viewers to discover new content from Disney+’s extensive library. Accessible through a new icon in the app’s navigation bar, users can effortlessly swipe through the feed, adding shows to their watchlist or diving straight into a movie or series. According to a recent blog post from the company, “With the latest streaming hits and an incredible catalog spanning more than 100 years of storytelling, we’re making it easier for fans to discover what to watch next.” The introduction of Verts transforms the experience of exploring Disney’s storytelling, presenting it in a fresh, engaging format tailored for mobile users who prefer quick video snippets. Currently, Verts highlights content from Disney+ offerings, but the company has plans to incorporate videos from creators that resonate with its fanbase, as well as various storytelling styles and personalized experiences. Early testing conducted in August on Disney+ and ESPN indicated that Verts significantly increased user engagement, largely thanks to its sophisticated recommendation algorithm that personalizes content for each viewer. Disney’s commitment to enhancing Verts through algorithmic improvements aligns with the success of TikTok, which thrives on effective recommendations. Furthermore, Disney+ is not the first streaming service to venture into vertical video; Netflix introduced a similar feature last year, allowing users to scroll through clips from its original productions. By embracing short-form video content, both Disney+ and Netflix are appealing to younger audiences who favor quick clips on their smartphones over traditional long-form viewing. Capturing a user’s interest through Verts could lead to an increased likelihood of them watching full-length shows or movies that initially caught their attention.
