Disney+ is considering a free streaming tier, report says

Disney+ is exploring the option of introducing a free streaming tier, as revealed in a recent report by Business Insider. During a town hall meeting, Adam Smith, Disney’s chief product and technology officer, addressed the potential of offering free content from the platform's extensive library. While specific titles or a timeline for this initiative remain unclear, the move could significantly bolster Disney+'s competitive edge against free streaming services like YouTube and Tubi. These platforms have been increasingly appealing to viewers, capturing a larger share of audience time. As the cost of subscriptions rises across various streaming services, many consumers are shifting towards ad-supported options. Data from Nielsen highlights this trend, showing that free streaming services accounted for 18.7% of television viewership in the U.S. as of April 2026, up from 16.8% the previous year and 12.7% two years prior. By offering a selection of free content, Disney+ aims to carve out a unique position in the market, distinguishing itself from competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime, especially since other platforms such as Apple TV+ and Paramount+ already offer free episodes to attract viewers.
