In a significant legal move, Disney and Universal Studios have filed a lawsuit against the artificial intelligence platform Midjourney, accusing it of unlawfully using their copyrighted material to train its models. The lawsuit, submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleges that Midjourney failed to heed previous warnings from the studios regarding violations of intellectual property rights. The complaint details numerous instances of images generated by Midjourney that feature iconic characters owned by the studios, including well-known figures such as Homer Simpson and Darth Vader. Disney and Universal are seeking not only financial compensation but also a jury trial and a court order to prevent Midjourney from continuing its alleged copyright infringements. As of now, Midjourney has not provided a public response to the allegations. This case comes amid wider discussions in the tech industry, where companies like OpenAI are advocating for legal protections that would allow them to train their AI systems on publicly available works, including those that are copyrighted, without needing explicit permission from the original creators. While some studios have dabbled in generative AI technologies, their efforts have largely remained cautious and limited.
