Let’s explore the best alternatives to Discord

Discord is set to implement mandatory age verification for its users by the end of 2026, raising concerns regarding the privacy implications of submitting sensitive information such as government IDs or facial scans. Although most features will remain accessible without verification, many users are hesitant to share personal data with a platform that previously experienced a breach exposing the IDs of approximately 70,000 accounts. This development has prompted some users to explore alternatives that prioritize security and privacy or simply offer a different user experience. Among the leading alternatives is Stoat, formerly known as Revolt. This open-source platform mirrors Discord's design and functionality, providing users with enhanced control over their data, which is appealing to those who prioritize privacy. Stoat features familiar text and voice channels along with community servers that make it easy for Discord users to transition, although the platform is still maturing and has faced server capacity challenges and occasional lag during peak times. For those who place a premium on privacy and autonomy, Element stands out as a robust option. Built upon the decentralized Matrix protocol, it allows users to host their own servers and ensures end-to-end encryption. This decentralized approach prevents any single entity from monopolizing user data, although the platform requires a bit more technical expertise for setup compared to Discord. If voice communication is your primary focus, TeamSpeak offers a solid alternative. Renowned among competitive gamers for its high-quality audio and private server options, TeamSpeak's text chat and media sharing features are somewhat basic. It lacks functionalities like built-in video calls, emojis, and gifs, but excels in providing a focused voice chat experience. The platform has recently expanded its hosting capabilities to accommodate an influx of new users. Another option is Mumble, a free and open-source voice chat application that delivers low-latency audio and server customization. While it offers powerful voice chat capabilities, its outdated interface and lack of modern features make it better suited for gamers who prioritize voice over community engagement. For those who prefer structured discussions, Discourse serves as an open-source forum platform that supports threaded conversations, making it ideal for educational groups and professional teams. However, users seeking casual chats or voice communication may find it less intuitive compared to Discord. Other noteworthy platforms include Slack and Microsoft Teams, which cater to professional communication needs, while Signal remains a favorite for those seeking end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp also provides free messaging and group voice calls, but is not tailored for gaming or large community interactions. In response to feedback regarding its upcoming age verification initiative, Discord has decided to postpone its rollout until the latter half of 2026. The platform aims to ensure the safety of its younger users while maintaining that 90% of users will not need to verify their age and can continue using the service without any interruptions, as many do not access age-restricted content.
