5 changes to know about in Apple’s latest iOS, macOS, and iPadOS betas

This week, Apple introduced its initial developer betas for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and macOS 26.4, followed shortly by public beta versions. Typically launched midway between major iOS updates, these point releases are known for introducing a host of new features and enhancements, and the latest betas seem to follow suit. Among the notable additions is a "Playlist Playground" feature designed for Apple Music users, allowing them to create playlists using text prompts. Additionally, the Podcasts app is set to include native support for video podcasts. Another new offering is the Creator Studio version of the Freeform app, which will enable users to access stock images from Apple's Content Hub and incorporate AI-generated visuals. As we delve deeper into the betas, we’ve uncovered several subtle improvements and modifications that Apple is currently testing. While some features may not make it into the public release until later updates, they provide a glimpse into what the final versions may look like. However, one anticipated feature is noticeably absent: the revamped, smarter Siri, which Apple had promised since the launch of iOS 18 in 2024. The company has postponed this feature until 2026, stating it did not meet their quality standards. Although there were expectations for Siri to debut in the 26.4 update, it appears it may now be pushed to version 26.5 or even iOS 27. As a reminder, exercise caution when installing beta software on devices you use daily. While these minor updates are usually more stable than the major releases tested during the summer and fall, they can still harbor bugs and impact device performance. The initial beta often presents the most challenges, but more stable iterations will arrive in the weeks ahead, with the final version expected in the next couple of months.
