Discord delays global rollout of age verification after backlash

Discord has officially announced a delay in its global age verification rollout, pushing the timeline from March to the latter half of 2026. This decision comes on the heels of significant backlash from the community earlier this month when the platform revealed plans to automatically place all users into a 'teen-appropriate experience' until they could verify their age as adults. In a clarifying statement, the company explained that approximately 90% of users will not require age verification and can continue using Discord without changes. This is primarily because most users do not engage with age-restricted content. Discord's internal safety measures are already capable of assessing the age of many adult users based on various factors such as account age, presence of a payment method, and server participation. Discord’s Chief Technology Officer, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, acknowledged the controversy surrounding the rollout. In a blog post, he admitted, "We anticipated pushback with this rollout, given its connection to identity and verification. In retrospect, we should have provided more comprehensive details about our objectives and processes." He emphasized that the public's perception—that users would need to undergo facial scans or upload identification to use Discord—was a miscommunication on their part. "That’s not the case," he clarified, stating that these misconceptions highlighted a failure to communicate effectively with users. For the minority of users required to verify their ages, Discord is now considering additional methods beyond the initial facial recognition and ID submissions. Plans include allowing verification through credit card transactions. Vishnevskiy reassured users that those who opt not to verify will retain access to their accounts, friends list, and other features, with the only changes being restrictions on age-restricted content and specific default safety settings meant to protect younger users. Moreover, Discord plans to enhance transparency by publishing detailed information about its verification vendors and their data policies while ensuring that any age verification processes are conducted entirely on users' devices. This shift in approach follows criticism of its previous partnership with Persona, a vendor linked to controversial practices in data handling and government relationships. Discord has since distanced itself from Persona, especially after a previous incident where sensitive user data was compromised due to a breach at another vendor. As Discord navigates these challenges, it remains committed to finding a balance between user safety and privacy while addressing community concerns.
