Think AI can hide the truth? How 2 Gurugram municipal workers lost their jobs over digital fraud

In a striking case of misconduct, the Gurugram Municipal Corporation has dismissed two contractual assistant sanitary inspectors following an internal investigation that unveiled serious fraudulent activities. One of the inspectors manipulated an image using AI technology to falsely claim that a garbage complaint had been resolved, while the other utilized GPS-spoofing software to mark attendance from home. The first inspector, Waseem, was tasked with clearing a significant garbage pile near Kherki Daula village. Instead of performing his duties, he allegedly created and uploaded an altered photograph to the official grievance portal on April 7, depicting a clean area that had not been attended to at all. Internal documents reveal that Waseem admitted to this forgery during a hearing on July 1, acknowledging that he had deliberately misled authorities by presenting AI-edited images. In a separate incident, Sonu, the second inspector, was found to have recorded his attendance while actually being at home during a field inspection on April 9. An investigation revealed that he had exploited unauthorized third-party applications, including Fly GPS, to falsify his location and attendance records. During his inquiry, Sonu confessed to using the spoofing app, further complicating the situation. The dismissal orders from MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya highlighted the severity of the misconduct, labeling it as “grave misconduct, fraud, dishonesty,” and indicative of behavior unworthy of public service. Both individuals, who were hired through Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited (HKRNL), were removed from their positions effective July 1. The corporation has also notified HKRNL, requesting the termination of their employment. This incident underscores the growing concerns regarding integrity and accountability within public service sectors, particularly as technology becomes more prevalent in operations.
