Here’s your first look at the rebooted Digg

The revamped Digg news aggregator has officially entered its testing phase, providing early users a glimpse into its potential as a competitor to Reddit, especially in this AI-driven age. Once valued at $175 million in 2008, Digg faced a decline that led to its fragmentation and sale a decade later. Now, its original founder Kevin Rose has joined forces with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to reintroduce the platform, aiming to cater to a new generation of internet users. The founders believe that the internet is currently inundated with bots and AI-driven content, increasing the demand for authentic online communities that prioritize human interaction. To enhance user authenticity, they are exploring the use of technologies like zero-knowledge proofs, which could help verify user identities before they engage in posting or discussions. On Friday, Digg released its iOS app to participants in its Groundbreakers community. This alpha version offers a sneak peek into the direction the new Digg is taking. The app features a clean interface with a navigation bar at the bottom that allows users to access various sections such as Home feed, Search, Leaderboards, and user profiles. Much like Reddit, Digg provides different content feeds, including Most Dugg, Newest, Trending, and Heating Up, which can be filtered based on the user's preferences. Currently, the number of communities available is limited, focusing on topics like art, entertainment, sports, and technology, with plans to expand community creation in future updates. Users can engage by sharing posts within these communities, allowing others to upvote, downvote, save, and comment. An intriguing feature of the app is its use of AI to summarize articles, a trend that has gained traction in other applications. However, users should note that the effectiveness of AI-generated summaries can vary, prompting some caution among publishers regarding their use. To differentiate its voting system from Reddit, Digg has introduced hand-like icons for upvoting and downvoting, though feedback indicates that the current design may confuse users about which icon corresponds to each action. The app also includes user profiles showcasing bios, statistics, posts, and achievements. Users can earn 'Gems' by being quick to Digg trending posts, with leaderboards highlighting top contributors, although Digg is responding to feedback by moderating gamification elements on the desktop version. A significant lesson from Digg's past is reflected in its new leaderboards, which refresh every 24 hours to avoid the dominance of particular users that plagued the original platform. This change aims to foster a more balanced environment and prevent any single user from exerting too much influence over trending content. While the alpha version of the new app shows promise, it remains to be seen what unique value it offers over Reddit. Future developments, including user-created communities and AI-assisted customization, may help define Digg's distinct identity in the competitive landscape of news aggregators.
