Homeland Security reportedly sent hundreds of subpoenas seeking to unmask anti-ICE accounts

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is ramping up its efforts to compel tech companies to reveal the identities of social media users critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Reports from The New York Times indicate that this trend aligns with previous findings, including a Bloomberg investigation highlighting five instances where DHS sought to uncover the identities of anonymous Instagram accounts. In those cases, the department withdrew its subpoenas after legal action was initiated by the account owners. Additionally, a report from The Washington Post has shed light on DHS's increasing reliance on administrative subpoenas, which bypass the need for judicial approval, to target American citizens. According to the latest information from the NYT, the previously infrequent use of these subpoenas has surged recently, with DHS issuing hundreds to major platforms including Google, Reddit, Discord, and Meta. The focus of these subpoenas appears to be on accounts lacking real names that either criticize ICE or disclose the whereabouts of ICE agents. In response, some companies, including Google and Meta, have complied with the requests in certain situations. Google has reiterated its commitment to user privacy, stating that it informs users of such subpoenas whenever possible and actively contests those deemed excessively broad.
