A significant fire has erupted at the Novelis aluminum facility in Oswego, New York, which plays a crucial role in supplying sheet metal for Ford's trucks, particularly the all-electric F-150 Lightning. The four-alarm incident began early Thursday morning and efforts to extinguish the flames are still ongoing. Local news source CNY Central was among the first to report on this alarming situation. This is not the first time the Novelis plant has faced such a crisis; a major fire in September halted operations and is estimated to have cost Ford approximately $2 billion in disruptions. Although a smaller fire occurred in October, Novelis had planned to resume production at the facility by December. The repercussions of the September fire were felt across the industry, with Stellantis and Nissan also experiencing production setbacks. Ford had to reduce output on nearly all variants of its F-150 trucks, which have long utilized aluminum body panels. Production gradually resumed in October, focusing on gas and hybrid models before the electric version was prioritized. The impact of this latest fire on Ford's production plans remains uncertain, as the company has yet to provide an official comment. Additionally, both the Oswego Fire Department and Novelis have not responded to inquiries regarding the ongoing incident.
