Dessn raises $6M for its production focused design tool

Dessn, an innovative design startup, has successfully raised $6 million in funding to enhance the way product teams interact with their codebases. This funding round, led by Connect Ventures and supported by Betaworks and N49P, aims to address the limitations of traditional design tools that do not integrate directly with code. Emerging alongside popular design platforms like Visual Electric and Weavy, Dessn offers a unique solution by enabling startups to run their codebases in the cloud without any setup costs. The company’s technology simplifies the complexities of local code execution, allowing designers to transition their work seamlessly to developers within a production environment. This streamlined process aids teams at renowned organizations such as health company Color, voice AI firm Wispr, and fintech leader Mercury. Founded by Gabriella Hachem and Nim Cheema, Dessn is rooted in the belief that as coding becomes more accessible and economical, the focus on design becomes crucial for differentiation in the software market. Cheema explained that the company’s approach is not about ideation from scratch but rather improving existing codebases for teams looking to iterate and innovate. Dessn’s unique model minimizes switching costs, allowing companies to incorporate it alongside existing tools like Figma without a complete overhaul. Users can experiment with Dessn on individual projects, promoting a flexible environment where teams can collaborate effortlessly through shareable links. While Dessn embraces AI for design creation, it acknowledges that some users may prefer traditional toolbars for manipulating designs. Hachem and Cheema aim to create context-specific tools rather than static interfaces, believing in a more dynamic user experience. The startup is also looking to integrate with platforms like Slack and Granola to enhance its functionality, although it opts not to integrate with Figma to maintain its production-focused ethos. Dessn offers a free tier allowing users to compile one repository and try five prompts weekly, with plans starting at $39 per user monthly for expanded capabilities. Betaworks partner Jordan Crook remarked that Dessn could be the product Figma would create if it were starting today, highlighting its unique approach to integrating design with production seamlessly. Currently a small team of four, Dessn plans to expand modestly as it continues to innovate in the design tools space.
