Danish military using robotic sailboats for surveillance in Baltic and North seas

In an innovative move, Denmark's military has introduced robotic sailboats designed for surveillance operations in the Baltic and North Seas. These vessels, measuring 10 meters (30 feet) in length, feature the iconic red-and-white Danish flag but operate without any crew onboard. The four uncrewed sailboats, dubbed "Voyagers," are currently undergoing a three-month operational trial, following their deployment by the Danish armed forces. Developed by Saildrone, a company based in Alameda, California, these autonomous vessels will monitor Danish and NATO waters, responding to heightened maritime tensions and concerns over sabotage that have surged since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. On Monday, two of the Voyagers embarked from Koge Marina, located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Copenhagen. These state-of-the-art sea drones utilize wind and solar energy, allowing them to operate independently for extended periods. Equipped with sophisticated sensor technology, including radar, infrared and optical cameras, sonar, and acoustic monitoring, the Voyagers are expected to provide comprehensive surveillance capabilities. Richard Jenkins, founder and CEO of Saildrone, likened the vessels to "trucks" that transport advanced sensors, employing machine learning and artificial intelligence to monitor both above and below the ocean's surface up to 30 to 50 kilometers (20 to 30 miles) away. He emphasized the significance of addressing maritime threats such as damage to undersea cables, illicit fishing, and the smuggling of contraband, which often go unnoticed due to a lack of surveillance. The Danish Defense Ministry has stated that this trial aims to enhance monitoring in critical areas, particularly around vital undersea infrastructure like fiber-optic cables and power lines. Lt. Gen. Kim Jørgensen, director of Danish National Armaments, acknowledged the tense security situation in the Baltic region and outlined plans for the Voyagers to assist in NATO exercises. This initiative arrives amidst a series of attacks on maritime infrastructure, including the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions and the recent severing of undersea cables. The trial is also set against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, especially following controversial remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty. Jenkins clarified that Saildrone's operations in Denmark were planned prior to Trump's reelection and refrained from commenting on political matters. The escalating maritime disruptions have been partly attributed to Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which operates aging oil tankers under unclear ownership to circumvent sanctions. As NATO endeavors to establish a comprehensive maritime surveillance system, integrating both uncrewed vessels like the Voyagers and traditional naval capabilities, experts highlight the need for effective and cost-efficient monitoring strategies. Peter Viggo Jakobsen from the Royal Danish Defense College noted the financial impracticality of deploying warships to track every vessel, advocating for a layered approach to enhance maritime security efficiently.
