Denmark clamps down on deepfakes by letting people copyright their own features

In a pioneering move, the Danish government is set to revise copyright laws, empowering citizens with rights over their own physical and vocal characteristics. This significant legislation aims to enhance safeguards against the rise of deepfake technology, as reported by The Guardian. The proposal, currently being prepared by Denmark’s department of culture, has already garnered bipartisan support. Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt emphasized the bill's importance, stating, "We are sending a clear message that individuals possess rights over their own bodies, voices, and facial features, which the existing laws fail to adequately protect in the face of generative AI." While several states in the United States have enacted laws addressing deepfakes—primarily focusing on electoral misuse and non-consensual explicit content—these regulations face uncertainty. Congress is deliberating a budget reconciliation bill that could undermine state authority to regulate AI for a decade, highlighting the urgent need for robust protective measures globally.
