Denmark plans to ban social media for users under 15, as PM says platforms are ‘stealing childhood’

Denmark is set to implement a ban on social media usage for individuals under the age of 15, as announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday. During the opening session of the Danish parliament, Frederiksen emphasized that social media platforms are significantly impacting children’s formative years, stating that they are 'stealing our children’s childhood.' Frederiksen revealed plans for legislation that would not only impose the ban but also allow parents to grant permission for social media use starting from age 13. She noted the importance of mobile phones in children’s lives for communication, saying, 'We have said yes to mobile phones in our children’s lives in the best sense. So they can call home and communicate with their friends.' However, she expressed serious concerns about the mental well-being of children, highlighting a surge in anxiety and depression among the youth. The Prime Minister pointed out alarming statistics, mentioning that 60% of boys aged 11 to 19 do not engage in face-to-face interactions with friends during their free time over the course of a week. Frederiksen questioned the impact of smartphones on these figures, suggesting that such isolation would likely not be as prevalent without them. The proposed legislation follows a previous decision by lawmakers to prohibit cell phone use in primary schools and after-school programs, a suggestion put forth by a well-being commission established by Frederiksen earlier this year. Denmark joins a growing list of countries taking measures to minimize children's exposure to mobile technology and social media. In November, Australia enacted a groundbreaking law banning social media for minors under 16, requiring tech companies to take significant steps to block underage access or face substantial fines. Meanwhile, Norway's Prime Minister has also suggested a similar ban for users under 15, initiating public consultations on the matter. As the debate over children's access to digital platforms continues, Denmark's initiative aims to foster a healthier environment for its youth, prioritizing their well-being over unrestricted online access.
