A significant transformation is underway at the White House as demolition crews commenced work on the East Wing this week. This initiative is paving the way for a new $300 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom, a project recently prioritized by President Donald Trump. The decision to tear down the East Wing has raised eyebrows and drawn criticism from Democratic lawmakers, former White House staffers, and citizens alike. Only three months prior, President Trump had assured the public that the ballroom construction would not impact the existing structure of the White House. "It won’t interfere with the current building," he stated in July, emphasizing that it would respect the historical integrity of the mansion. The abrupt demolition has left many surprised, with Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) commenting that the "optics are bad" during a government shutdown. She noted, "People are saying, 'Oh, the government’s being destroyed,' and now it looks like the White House is physically being destroyed." In an effort to manage the situation, the US Secret Service has restricted access to the Ellipse, a public park that provides a view of the South Lawn. Journalists attempting to capture images of the demolition were reportedly escorted out by Secret Service personnel. Additionally, employees at the nearby Treasury Building have been instructed to refrain from sharing photos of the ongoing work, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
