Will AI end cheap flights? Critics attack Delta’s “predatory” AI pricing.

Delta Airlines has stepped into the spotlight as the first carrier to implement an artificial intelligence-driven pricing model aimed at enhancing profitability through personalized ticket pricing. This initiative, which has been in pilot testing for several months, has raised alarms among consumers as it leads to varying prices for identical flights based on individual data profiles. Critics argue that this strategy goes beyond traditional airline pricing practices, which typically offer discounts for early bookings compared to last-minute purchases. Experts warn that if other airlines adopt similar AI pricing strategies, it could signal the end of affordable flight options for travelers. During a recent earnings call, Delta's President Glen William Hauenstein revealed that approximately 3 percent of domestic flights had utilized this AI pricing system over the past six months. The airline aims to expand this to 20 percent by the year's end. Consumer advocacy group Watchdog has raised concerns about the fairness of individualized pricing. They emphasize that without transparency in how these prices are determined, it remains uncertain whether the practice could infringe upon federal regulations that prevent discriminatory pricing based on protected characteristics such as gender or ethnicity. Reports indicate that this AI approach often benefits wealthier consumers, while those with fewer financial resources may end up facing higher costs. Last November, Hauenstein indicated that Delta's long-term objective is to eliminate fixed pricing altogether. The airline's recent performance has reportedly yielded “amazing results,” fueling further motivation to refine this pricing model. As Delta continues to assess this technology, other airlines may soon follow suit, potentially transforming the landscape of air travel pricing altogether. "We like what we see," Hauenstein stated confidently during the call, reflecting the airline's optimism about this new revenue strategy.
