Michael Dell courted Trump early. His company has reaped rewards

Michael Dell's early support of President Donald Trump is paying off significantly for Dell Technologies, which has recently experienced its most successful month on Wall Street since going public again in 2018. Following Trump's return to the White House last year, Dell was a prominent attendee at the president's Invest America Roundtable in June 2025. In December, Trump publicly acknowledged Michael and Susan Dell during a significant announcement of a $6.25 billion donation aimed at establishing investment accounts for 25 million children in the U.S. This month, Trump encouraged Americans to purchase Dell products, a call that coincided with the Pentagon awarding Dell a substantial $9.7 billion contract. This deal, which is intended to supply a suite of software for the U.S. military, has sparked debate over its legitimacy, with some experts questioning the potential implications of the company's recent philanthropic contributions. Greg Williams, director of the Center for Defense Information, commented, "It looks terrible is the short answer," highlighting concerns over the motivations behind the donation and the contract. The situation reflects a broader trend where businesses are increasingly seeking to gain favor with the current administration, straying from traditional philanthropic practices. Megan Tompkins-Stange, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, noted, "What's new here is they're not giving through an intermediary or through a nonprofit, which is typically how philanthropy works. Instead, they are giving directly to this branded initiative with Trump's name." Before receiving the Pentagon contract, Dell Technologies had already seen its stock value nearly triple over the past year, bringing the company’s market capitalization to over $200 billion. Michael Dell, who has been a trusted advisor to Trump since the beginning of his first term in 2017, witnessed the company's stock surge following impressive revenue growth. Dell’s performance was bolstered by high demand for its servers, particularly those equipped with graphics processing units for artificial intelligence applications, resulting in a staggering 342% increase in AI server sales. In a recent financial report, Dell announced a remarkable 88% increase in total revenue, with AI server revenue skyrocketing by 757%. Following this news, the company’s stock soared 39% in after-hours trading, bringing its price to $441.56. If Trump retained the shares he purchased in February, he could be looking at profits ranging between $1.5 million and $7.5 million. Over the past year, Dell's shares have surged approximately 179%, significantly outpacing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Michael Dell, the founder of the company established in 1984, remains its largest individual shareholder with a stake valued at nearly $6 billion. The couple’s philanthropic efforts have evolved, with their foundation established in 1999 focusing on improving the lives of children in poverty through various initiatives. The recent donation, however, marks a notable shift in strategy, as it exceeds their previous philanthropic contributions and is directly tied to a government program rather than traditional nonprofit channels. The White House has lauded the Dells for their contributions, asserting that Trump's support stems purely from their significant donation to American children. As the Dells expand their philanthropic commitments, including a recent $750 million pledge to the University of Texas at Austin for a new medical campus, they continue to navigate the complex intersection of business, philanthropy, and politics, raising questions about the implications of their direct ties to the current administration.
