Dell wins a $9.7 billion Pentagon software deal after cozying up to Trump

In a significant move, the Department of Defense has formally announced a five-year contract valued at approximately $9.7 billion with Dell. This agreement is set to provide essential software solutions for the U.S. military, specifically under the Microsoft Department of War Enterprise Software Agreement II Core Enterprise Technology Agreement. Dell is tasked with delivering Microsoft 365, advanced cloud subscriptions, and on-premises licensing capabilities. The deal was awarded to Dell Federal Systems, a division focused on government contracts, following a competitive evaluation process, according to officials including Defense Department Chief Information Officer Kirsten Davies and acting Navy Chief Information Officer Barry Tanner. This agreement comes on the heels of Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, making headlines last year after committing $6.25 billion to support investment accounts for children, often referred to as "Trump accounts." Dell has maintained a long-standing partnership with Microsoft and is a leading purchaser of Windows PC licenses. Tanner explained that vendors were assessed based on competitive pricing, comparison to General Services Administration (GSA) schedule pricing, and their overall value to the defense sector. He noted, "Through the evaluation process, they emerged as the top candidate." The contract's primary goal is to streamline the acquisition of Microsoft licenses necessary for the Pentagon's enterprise systems, which will help eliminate redundancies in technology licensing across various government agencies. Davies highlighted that this second-generation blanket purchase agreement aims to consolidate vital Microsoft software and services across the Department of War, the intelligence community, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Officials anticipate that this strategic move will yield annual savings of around $422 million by integrating existing IT budgets from multiple services into a more efficient framework. The Pentagon is currently under significant pressure from Congress to achieve a clean audit, especially as it seeks a substantial $1.5 trillion budget for fiscal year 2027. Former President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for Dell, remarking at a recent Mother's Day event at the White House, "go out and buy a Dell," praising the Dell family's contributions to the Trump accounts. In return, Dell has publicly congratulated Trump on his 2024 election victory, expressing optimism for future collaboration and progress under his leadership, and has joined Trump's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
