Dell 14 Plus: Premium build and all-day battery at₹85000, is it enough?

Upon first encountering the Dell 14 Plus, my expectations were tempered by the familiarity of yet another AI-driven laptop in the competitive ₹80,000 price range. However, after more than two weeks of hands-on experience, I discovered several noteworthy aspects worth discussing, along with areas that could benefit from improvement. The unboxing experience showcased the laptop's striking Ice Blue aluminum chassis, which exudes a premium feel and is remarkably sturdy. The smooth finish envelops the entire device, including the lid, deck, and back. Weighing in at just 1.52 kg and featuring a slim profile with rounded edges, this laptop is highly portable, making it easy to carry around. One standout feature is the laptop's hinge mechanism, which provides a firm hold without any wobble in the lid. Despite its robustness, the lid can be opened effortlessly with a single hand, a commendable design choice. Dell has clearly dedicated significant attention to the keyboard. The backlit keyboard includes a fingerprint sensor and a Copilot key, delivering a responsive and comfortable typing experience ideal for lengthy sessions. The layout is user-friendly, with the fingerprint sensor conveniently positioned in the top right corner, alongside the Copilot key for quick access to the assistant. Users transitioning from a MacBook may notice the longer key travel, but this can be overlooked in favor of a pleasant, quiet typing experience. The trackpad, while functional, is fairly basic with clicky buttons. For this price point, a glass surface would enhance the user experience significantly. At the core of the Dell 14 Plus lies the AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 processor, boasting 8 cores and 16 threads. With a base clock speed of 2 GHz and the ability to boost up to 5.0 GHz, the chipset adapts efficiently to various tasks. Thanks to the integrated NPU, it excels in handling AI-related operations. Synthetic benchmarks confirm its capability, translating effectively into real-world performance, with seamless multitasking supported by 16GB LPDDR5 RAM. However, while the single-core performance is impressive, the multi-core capabilities fall short compared to similarly priced Intel Core Ultra 7 255H laptops. This was unexpected, especially from an AMD processor, as highlighted by the results in Cinebench. In terms of temperature, the laptop remains quiet and cool when on battery. However, when plugged in, it generates some heat, with the left side becoming noticeably warm while the right side remains cool. Thankfully, it cools down quickly once unplugged, with performance remaining stable throughout. The integrated Radeon 860M GPU, equipped with 512MB of dedicated VRAM and 8GB of shared memory, handles most indie games with decent frame rates, though it isn't the most powerful option in a non-gaming laptop. The 14-inch FHD+ display features a 16:10 aspect ratio, providing satisfactory brightness and anti-glare properties for improved outdoor visibility. It’s well-suited for typical office tasks and multimedia consumption, although users involved in serious photo or video editing may find it lacking. Audio quality is another strong point, with Dolby Atmos enhancing the speaker output, offering depth in sound. Running on Windows 11 Home, the Dell 14 Plus impresses with a clean installation, featuring minimal pre-installed apps, most of which are inactive until needed. The NVMe PCIe Gen 4 storage delivers excellent speeds, while connectivity options include two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI 1.4, and an audio jack. An HDMI 2.1 port and an SD card reader would have been welcome additions. The standout feature of the Dell 14 Plus is undoubtedly its battery life, easily lasting around 10 hours on optimized settings. The efficient power management of the Ryzen AI 7 350 chip makes this laptop ideal for all-day use. Additionally, Type-C charging adds convenience, allowing the use of any compatible 65-watt USB-C charger. While the Dell 14 Plus may not steal the spotlight with its aesthetics or benchmark scores, it shines as a reliable choice for users seeking endurance and dependable performance for office tasks. Priced at ₹84,889, it offers exceptional build quality, extended battery life, and solid performance, making it a worthwhile investment for those prioritizing portability and reliability.
