Deezer’s new tool can identify AI music from Spotify, Apple Music, and others

With the surge of AI-generated music across various streaming services, concerns have emerged regarding the use of copyrighted material for training AI models and the potential for fraudulent activities within streaming systems. In response to this growing issue, Deezer has taken a proactive approach by launching a tool designed to identify AI-generated tracks within playlists from multiple streaming platforms. Announced on Thursday, this free online tool supports 27 languages and allows users from 20 popular services to check for AI-generated songs in their playlists. Deezer's initiative positions it as a leading advocate against the rise of AI music in the industry, setting it apart from competitors. While platforms like Apple Music and Spotify have opted to tag AI content, Deezer actively removes these tracks from its recommendations and editorial playlists. To utilize the new feature, users can visit Deezer’s AI music detector website, select their preferred streaming service, and grant access to their playlists. The tool will then scan for AI-generated content, notify users of any findings, and provide options for sharing the results. It is compatible with popular platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music. “Over the past year and a half, Deezer has led the way in promoting transparency in music streaming by detecting and tagging AI-generated music. As no other company has yet followed our lead, we decided to make it accessible for everyone to check if their playlists contain synthetic music, regardless of the streaming platform,” stated Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier. In a noteworthy revelation, Deezer disclosed that an astounding 44% of all new music uploaded to its platform is now AI-generated, with the company receiving nearly 75,000 AI tracks daily—amounting to over two million a month. Despite this influx, AI-generated music accounts for only 1-3% of total streams, with approximately 85% of these flagged as fraudulent and subsequently demonetized by the platform. Deezer is also contemplating future actions, such as revising supplier policies or potentially removing AI-generated content, following in the footsteps of Bandcamp, which banned AI music earlier this year.
