DeepSeek is currently engaged in discussions to secure its inaugural round of venture capital funding, with its estimated valuation reportedly leaping from $20 billion to an impressive $45 billion in just a matter of weeks, according to reports from the Financial Times and Bloomberg. This Chinese AI laboratory gained significant attention in early 2025 following the release of a large language model that operates with a fraction of the computational power and cost compared to its American counterparts, such as those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Since its launch, DeepSeek has maintained a competitive edge in key areas like reasoning and coding while offering open-weight versions of its models on platforms like Hugging Face. Founded by billionaire hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng, who retains nearly 90% ownership of the company, DeepSeek had previously not pursued external investment. However, as competition intensifies and rival companies begin to recruit its talent, Liang has chosen to seek funding. This move aims to provide employees with stock options, as reported by sources to the Financial Times. The investment round is expected to be led by the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, a state-backed initiative. This aligns with China's broader strategy to cultivate domestic AI technologies and mitigate reliance on U.S. tech, particularly in the semiconductor sector. DeepSeek has been specifically optimized to function on chips produced by Huawei Technologies, positioning it as a strong contender in the race for AI innovation against the United States. Additionally, major Chinese cloud service providers such as Tencent and Alibaba are reportedly considering participation in this funding round, as indicated by Bloomberg. DeepSeek has not yet responded to requests for comment.
