Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, has articulated his belief that the singularity—a pivotal moment in artificial intelligence development—is imminent. Speaking with Axios co-founder Mike Allen during the Google I/O developer conference, Hassabis highlighted the emergence of advanced AI agents capable of creating complex solutions for users. The singularity is described as a theoretical point where AI surpasses human intelligence and begins to enhance itself autonomously. Hassabis provided a personal example, sharing how he utilizes AI to develop mini video games, a process that would have previously consumed months of effort. "This year, with the agentic systems that we're all experiencing, I believe we can start to sense its arrival now," he stated. Furthermore, Hassabis predicts that artificial general intelligence (AGI)—machines with cognitive abilities comparable to humans—could potentially be realized by 2030. He emphasized that the transformative impact of AI is frequently underestimated, claiming it will surpass the Industrial Revolution by a factor of 100. While acknowledging the inherent risks associated with AI, Hassabis remains optimistic, asserting that humanity will leverage this technology to address significant challenges, particularly in the fields of science and healthcare. "I consider myself a cautious optimist," he remarked. During his address at the I/O conference, he expressed that future generations may look back at this period as the beginning of the singularity, which elicited a surprised reaction from the audience.
