DeepMind reveals Genie 3 “world model” that creates real-time interactive simulations

In an exciting leap forward for generative artificial intelligence, Google DeepMind has introduced Genie 3, a state-of-the-art world model that pushes the limits of interactive simulations. Just seven months after the debut of Genie 2, which marked a significant progress in AI capabilities, Genie 3 takes this innovation even further. With Genie 3, users can effortlessly create and manipulate an interactive environment using just a prompt or an image. The dynamic nature of this model allows for real-time alterations, enabling users to add or modify objects, change weather conditions, or introduce new characters—features that DeepMind refers to as "promptable events." This flexibility could revolutionize the gaming landscape, making experiences more engaging for players and providing developers with innovative avenues to explore game design. Despite the potential, some voices within the gaming sector remain skeptical about the practical applications of such tools. While it may be easy to view Genie 3 solely as a game creation tool, DeepMind emphasizes its role as a research instrument as well. Games are pivotal in advancing AI technology, as they present complex, interactive scenarios with quantifiable progress, a strategy DeepMind has previously employed with classics like Go and StarCraft. Genie 3 enhances the concept of world models by generating interactive environments frame by frame. This innovation presents a unique opportunity to improve how AI models—especially those termed "embodied agents"—function in real-world contexts. A major hurdle in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has been the lack of reliable training data. Having already processed vast amounts of online content, researchers are now looking towards synthetic data, and DeepMind believes that world models could significantly contribute to this endeavor, offering virtually limitless interactive worlds for training AI agents. DeepMind asserts that Genie 3 represents a crucial advancement in AI technology, boasting significantly improved visual fidelity compared to its predecessor, along with the capability to operate in real-time. Users can navigate through the simulated world at 720p resolution and 24 frames per second using keyboard inputs, and perhaps most impressively, Genie 3 possesses the ability to remember the worlds it generates.
