Translation startup DeepL launches an AI 'agent' in challenge to players like OpenAI

German startup DeepL has announced a bold expansion beyond its core service of AI-driven translation, venturing into the realm of general AI agents designed specifically for business applications. This innovative tool, known as DeepL Agent, functions as an AI assistant capable of executing tasks autonomously in response to user commands. DeepL Agent is engineered to handle repetitive and time-consuming activities across various departments, ranging from human resources to marketing. The technology allows users to issue natural language commands, streamlining workflows and improving operational efficiency. In a landscape where digital assistants are becoming essential for automating mundane tasks, DeepL aims to position itself alongside industry giants like Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and Anthropic’s Claude, both of which cater to enterprise clientele. Founded in 2017 and currently valued at $2 billion, DeepL is shifting its focus to compete with major players in the AI sector such as OpenAI and Anthropic. CEO Jarek Kutylowski emphasized that the development of DeepL Agent is a logical extension of the company's translation services. He stated, "We discovered that our technology can assist you in various tasks, particularly during research, by alleviating the burden of switching between different systems and transferring data." DeepL's translation technology relies on its proprietary large language models, and Kutylowski confirmed that the DeepL Agent leverages both these in-house models and external resources. While many companies are now promoting AI agents, the market remains in its infancy, yet investor enthusiasm for AI ventures continues to thrive. Recently, Amazon-backed Anthropic announced a funding round that boosted its valuation to an impressive $183 billion. As the technology sector shows signs of revitalization with upcoming IPOs from firms like Klarna and crypto exchange Gemini, CNBC inquired about DeepL's potential public offering plans. Kutylowski clarified, "An IPO is not something we are considering in the short term."
