
A recent launch of a commercial Chinese rocket has led to a concerning event in low-Earth orbit, where its upper stage fragmented, dispersing debris in a critical area used by the International Space Station (ISS) and many of SpaceX's Starlink satellites. The Zhuque-2E rocket, which successfully reached orbit on June 9 carrying two satellites intended for direct-to-cell communications, experienced this breakup shortly after its launch. This incident likely occurred just as the rocket's upper stage was scheduled to perform a disposal burn, a procedure meant to minimize space debris. The US Space Force confirmed the breakup through a post on space-track.org, a platform that shares orbital data with the public. In their advisory, they noted, "The tracked pieces are being incorporated into routine conjunction assessment to support spaceflight safety," assuring that there are currently no immediate threats to human spaceflight. Ongoing analysis is being conducted to monitor the situation. Darren McKnight, a senior technical fellow at the orbital intelligence firm LeoLabs, estimated that the fragmentation might have produced between 100 and 150 individual debris fragments. Notably, one of the debris pieces consists of the second stage of the Zhuque-2E rocket, which measures approximately 25 to 30 feet (about 8 meters) in length and 11 feet (3.35 meters) in diameter. Currently, the main body of the rocket's upper stage is orbiting Earth at altitudes ranging from 208 to 263 miles (335 to 424 kilometers) with an inclination of 54.5 degrees to the equator. This trajectory crosses paths with the ISS's orbit; however, atmospheric drag is expected to lower all debris fragments swiftly beneath the ISS’s orbit. The debris poses a more significant risk to the hundreds of Starlink satellites, especially those designed for direct-to-device connectivity, as they operate at lower altitudes compared to the majority of the Starlink network.
