Lanternsteaser swaps superhero hijinks for gritty realism

James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking the DC Universe in a more serious direction with their latest project. The 'Gods and Monsters' chapter now introduces 'Lanterns,' an eight-episode series that transforms the Green Lantern lore into a gritty crime drama and spy thriller reminiscent of shows like 'True Detective' and 'Slow Horses.' The narrative centers on two iterations of the Green Lantern as they delve into a chilling mystery rooted in the American Heartland, specifically Nebraska. This new approach marks a departure from the superhero hijinks typically associated with the franchise, and the recently released teaser hints at a unique tonal shift that may redefine DC's storytelling. Starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, a former test pilot nearing retirement from the Green Lantern Corps, the series also features Aaron Pierre as his trainee, John Stewart Jr. Fans will recognize Nathan Fillion reprising his role as the brash Guy Gardner. The supporting cast includes Kelly McDonald as Kerry, a family-oriented sheriff; Jason Ritter as her husband, Billy Macon; and Garret Dillahunt as Kerry’s cowboy father-in-law, William Macon. Other notable characters include Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as the rogue former Corps member Sinestro, and Paul Ben-Victor as an alien named Antaan. The series also introduces Sherman Augustus as John Stewart Sr., with J. Alphonse Nicholson portraying his younger self. Nicole Ari Parker plays Bernadette Stewart, John Jr.'s mother, with Jasmine Cephas taking on the role of her younger counterpart. The ensemble is rounded out by Chris Coy as a nervous truck driver and Cary Christopher as a gifted child named Noah, alongside Laura Linney and Paula Patton in undisclosed guest roles. With its compelling premise and talented cast, 'Lanterns' has quickly climbed the ranks to become a highly anticipated addition to the DC lineup, set to premiere in 2026.
