Retail resurrection: David’s Bridal bets its future on AI after double bankruptcy

In a new store located in Delray Beach, Florida, brides-to-be are experiencing a revolutionary approach to wedding planning through an innovative AI system. As they interact with a large touchscreen, the technology analyzes their selections to create a personalized wedding roadmap, linking them with vendors and suggesting products tailored to their preferences. This AI assistant aims to simplify the daunting task of managing over 300 wedding-related tasks, offering timely suggestions and dynamically adjusting plans as needed. This forward-thinking initiative, known as Pearl Planner, is a significant part of David’s Bridal's strategy to rebound from two bankruptcies. The retailer views this technological shift as a crucial step to thrive in a challenging market where thousands of stores are projected to close this year. The so-called "retail apocalypse" has led to over 133 major retail bankruptcies and 57,000 store closures since 2018, underscoring the urgency of David’s Bridal's transformation. After narrowly escaping liquidation in its second bankruptcy in 2023, the company secured a lifeline from CION Investment Corporation, which invested $20 million in revitalizing its operations. Spearheading this transformation is new CEO Kelly Cook, who has shifted the company’s focus from traditional retail practices to leveraging AI technology. Cook's strategy includes appointing Elina Vilk, a seasoned tech executive, as president to spearhead this change. Vilk's background in digital technology and marketing, acquired through years at companies like eBay and Meta, provides a fresh perspective for the 75-year-old bridal retailer. She faced the challenge of assembling a team capable of executing this AI-driven vision. Bringing in Mike Bal, an experienced product leader, Vilk emphasized a collaborative structure that integrates AI expertise across the organization rather than isolating it within a single department. Bal recognized the need for a sophisticated AI system tailored to the unique challenges of wedding planning. By employing a knowledge graph architecture, he aimed to create a system that could understand and respond to brides' visions, moving beyond traditional search methods. This innovative approach allows the AI to map relationships between preferences, making it easier for brides to communicate their desires effectively. The Pearl Planner platform, currently in beta, is designed to not only streamline the planning process but also to address the emotional aspects of wedding preparations. The team has focused on creating a user-friendly interface that captures detailed preferences, facilitating a personalized experience for each bride. As David’s Bridal prepares for its public launch of Pearl Planner, the company is carving out a new business model that relies on subscriptions from vendors rather than just dress sales. This strategy aims to create a sustainable revenue stream while fostering a deeper connection with clients. The rollout is poised for further enhancements, with plans to introduce features that improve the overall experience for brides and wedding planners alike. With a vision for continuous improvement and an emphasis on emotional engagement, David’s Bridal is not just adapting to a changing retail landscape but redefining its role within it.
