Datacurve raises $15 million to take on ScaleAI

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, securing high-quality data has become a fiercely competitive battleground. As companies like ScaleAI, founded by Alexandr Wang, have made their mark, new players are stepping up to reshape the industry. With Wang now at the helm of AI initiatives at Meta, opportunities have emerged, prompting investors to support firms with fresh approaches to gathering training data. One such firm is Datacurve, a Y Combinator graduate that has positioned itself to tackle the complexities of data collection for software development. Recently, the company announced an impressive $15 million Series A funding round, spearheaded by Mark Goldberg at Chemistry. Notably, the round also saw participation from individuals affiliated with renowned entities such as DeepMind, Vercel, Anthropic, and OpenAI. This follows Datacurve's earlier success in raising $2.7 million during its seed round, which gained traction thanks to investment from former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan. Datacurve has introduced an innovative “bounty hunter” system designed to engage skilled software engineers in sourcing difficult datasets. To incentivize participation, the company has already allocated over $1 million in bounties for completed tasks. However, co-founder Serena Ge emphasizes that the appeal goes beyond financial rewards. In an industry where compensation for data-related tasks often pales in comparison to traditional software roles, Datacurve aims to create a superior user experience. "We treat this as a consumer product, not just a data labeling service," Ge stated. "Our focus is on optimizing the platform to attract and retain the right talent." As the demand for sophisticated post-training data continues to evolve, the requirements for data quality and quantity have intensified. Early AI models relied on simpler datasets, but today's applications necessitate intricate reinforcement learning environments, which demand strategic and specific data collection efforts. This shift presents a significant advantage for high-quality data providers like Datacurve. While Datacurve's current focus is on software engineering, Ge believes their model has the potential to extend into other sectors, including finance, marketing, and healthcare. "We are building an infrastructure for post-training data collection that not only attracts but also retains top talent in various domains," Ge concluded.
