Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has provided clarity regarding a widely discussed incident from the India AI Impact Summit that took place earlier this year. The moment, which featured both Amodei and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, seemingly refusing to hold hands on stage, sparked a flurry of speculation regarding the competitive dynamics between their two companies. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Amodei attributed the awkwardness not to any corporate discord, but rather to the chaotic nature of the event. "The summit was extremely disorganised," he explained. "We all arrived at the last minute, they changed our positions, took a photo, and then suddenly instructed us to hold hands." Amodei clarified that his comments were not intended as a critique of India specifically. He noted that similar international summits often encounter organizational challenges. "I'm not implying anything negative about India in particular; these types of global events with heads of state tend to be quite disorganised," he remarked. He vividly recalled the moment Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present when the hand-holding directive was issued, adding, "There was Narendra Modi up there suddenly telling everyone to hold hands." Amodei, along with his sister Daniela and others, departed from OpenAI in 2021 to establish Anthropic, which has since emerged with a strong emphasis on AI safety. Further in the interview, Amodei addressed the reasons behind his exit from OpenAI. He indicated that differences in safety perspectives were not the sole reason for his departure. Instead, he emphasized that trust issues were a significant factor. "When you feel that you can't trust someone... that makes it very hard to continue to work with a company," he expressed. Amodei stated he feels completely reconciled with his decision to leave. "Why argue with someone when you don't share the same vision and don't trust them? The best resolution is to pursue your own path while they pursue theirs," he concluded, emphasizing that the market and public sentiment would ultimately determine the trajectory of both companies.
