Meet Dario Amodei, Anthropic's outspoken CEO

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, is no stranger to controversy. With bold predictions that artificial intelligence could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs within the next five years, he has stirred up significant discussion in the tech community. While major players like Meta have sought a decade-long pause on state-level AI regulations, Amodei has emerged as a vocal opponent, arguing against such measures in a New York Times op-ed. His confrontations extend to leading figures in the tech world, including Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia. Amodei has advocated for U.S. export controls on AI technology, which would impact Nvidia’s ability to sell advanced chips in China. He acknowledges that some view his perspective as overly pessimistic, labeling him a "doomer." However, Amodei clarifies his stance in a provocative 2024 essay, highlighting that his focus on AI's risks stems from a desire to ensure a beneficial future. Born in 1983 in San Francisco, Amodei was raised in a family that valued education and hard sciences. His sister, Daniela, later became his co-founder at Anthropic, established in 2021. After an early fascination with counting and numbers, he pursued physics at prestigious institutions like Caltech and Stanford, later shifting to biophysics following the death of his father from a rare illness. This personal loss deeply influenced his views on technological advancements in healthcare. In 2011, Amodei earned a Ph.D. in physics and transitioned into artificial intelligence, initially joining Baidu, where he recognized the potential of scaling AI models. His journey in AI continued at Google and then OpenAI, where he significantly contributed to the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3. However, a divergence in values regarding AI safety led him to leave OpenAI in 2020, seeking a new path with Anthropic. Despite skepticism about Anthropic's ability to compete with established giants like OpenAI, the company achieved unicorn status within two years. By mid-2022, they had trained their chatbot, Claude, although they chose to delay its release. This decision came just months before OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a move that Amodei later reflected on as potentially beneficial for their strategy. Now, Anthropic has carved out a niche in the business-focused AI sector, generating substantial revenue and earning Amodei and his co-founders billionaire status by 2025. With a net worth estimated at $1.2 billion, Amodei continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI, balancing innovation with a commitment to safety.
