Dario Amodei on why he left Sam Altman and OpenAI: 'Why argue with someone' when you 'don't trust them'

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has shared insights into the ongoing rivalry between his company and OpenAI, indicating he feels at ease with their differing paths. During a recent interview on Bloomberg's 'The Circuit with Emily Chang,' Amodei expressed his belief that arguing with those who do not share your vision is futile. "At the end of the day, why argue with someone when you don't have the same vision and you don't trust them?" he remarked, seemingly directed at OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman. Amodei emphasized that both companies are pursuing their unique approaches to artificial intelligence, stating, "I am completely at peace with the idea that we're doing things our way and they're doing things their way." He suggested that the market and public opinion will ultimately determine who prevails in this ongoing competition. The origins of Anthropic's formation, which involved Amodei, his sister Daniela, and several other OpenAI employees leaving in 2020, have become a significant narrative in Silicon Valley. Once seen as the underdog, Anthropic is now positioned as a strong contender in the generative AI landscape. Amodei's comments have gained renewed attention following a New Yorker article by Ronan Farrow that questioned Altman's trustworthiness. This report referenced Amodei's notes from his tenure at OpenAI, which added depth to the ongoing scrutiny of their relationship. In the aftermath of the article's release, Altman faced an incident at his home, which he attributed in part to the fallout from the report. In discussing the dynamics of AI collaboration, Amodei highlighted the importance of establishing trust among industry players. He argued that those considered trustworthy should lead efforts to set standards, compelling others to follow suit. "What I think needs to happen is that the trustworthy actors need to get together and put the untrustworthy actors in a position where they kind of have to adopt the same standards," he noted. Despite the competitive atmosphere, Amodei affirmed that not all relationships in the AI field are adversarial. He pointed to his long-standing rapport with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, as an example of collaborative trust in the industry. "I've known him for 15 years. We've worked together on a number of issues," he stated, suggesting that there are indeed trustworthy players outside of Anthropic as well.
