Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has shed light on his decision to leave OpenAI, revealing that differences in vision and concerns over AI safety and governance prompted him and his colleagues to create Anthropic. In a recent interview on 'The Circuit with Emily Chang' at Bloomberg, Amodei expressed confidence in the competitive landscape, stating, "At the end of the day, why argue with someone when you don't have the same vision and you don't trust them?" This sentiment highlights the fundamental reasons behind his departure from OpenAI. Amodei emphasized that the best way to address divergent paths in AI development is to allow each organization to pursue its own objectives. "I am completely at peace with the idea that we're doing things our way and they're doing things their way," he remarked. He believes that the eventual outcomes of this competition will be determined by each company's performance in the market and public perception. "We'll see who wins in the market and we'll see who wins in the court of public opinion," he stated, underlining the importance of tangible results over internal disputes. The discussion surrounding Amodei's exit has resurfaced following a recent article in The New Yorker, which brought to light internal challenges at OpenAI, including issues of trust, leadership, and decision-making. Furthermore, the rivalry between Anthropic and OpenAI has intensified, as both companies vie for talent, customers, and technological supremacy. In addition to industry competition, Amodei recounted a rather uncomfortable moment with OpenAI's Sam Altman at the India AI Impact Summit, where they found themselves unexpectedly seated next to each other. Reflecting on the event, he remarked, "Look, I don't know what to tell you, OK? There was like Narendra Modi up there suddenly telling everyone to hold hands," and described the summit as "extremely disorganised."
