In a striking response to geopolitical tensions, Danish consumers are mobilizing against American products, fueled by a recent surge in two innovative mobile applications. These apps, designed to help users identify American-made goods and suggest local alternatives, have climbed to the forefront of the Danish App Store in recent days. The rise in app popularity is a direct reaction to former President Trump's controversial remarks about Greenland, a territory of Denmark. As part of a grassroots movement, many Danes are boycotting U.S. products, leading to increased downloads of NonUSA and Made O’Meter. Both applications have made significant strides in user engagement, with NonUSA recently reaching the number one spot in the App Store after soaring from sixth place just a day earlier. NonUSA allows users to scan barcodes on products to check their origins, providing information directly on their iPhones. The app not only highlights American products but also recommends local Danish alternatives, promoting domestic purchases. Its user base extends beyond Denmark, with rising interest noted in Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, reflecting a broader Nordic sentiment against U.S. goods. Meanwhile, Made O’Meter, while less prominent, has also secured a position in the top five of the Danish App Store. The combined impact of these apps has resulted in an astonishing 867% increase in daily downloads over the past week. Despite Denmark's smaller market size compared to the U.S., where downloads can reach millions, the dynamics of the Danish App Store indicate that even a few thousand downloads can propel an app to the top. Currently, the App Store in Denmark registers around 200,000 downloads daily across all applications. Alongside these boycotting apps, other popular downloads include travel tools like Rejsekort and several U.S.-based applications such as Shop, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Authenticator.
