Cybersecurity stocks rally on AI spending change comments from IBM's Krishna

On Tuesday, shares of cybersecurity companies experienced a significant boost following remarks from IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, highlighting the rising priority of cybersecurity among clients. In preliminary results for the second quarter, Krishna indicated that clients were reallocating their budgets towards servers and memory, citing "rapidly-evolving, industry-wide cybersecurity concerns" as a major distraction. The growing prevalence of advanced AI models, such as Anthropic's Mythos, has intensified fears on Wall Street, raising alarms about potentially faster and more sophisticated cyber threats. During an interview with CNBC's Sara Eisen, Krishna noted that several substantial deals were postponed toward the end of the quarter as organizations reconsidered their spending strategies. "Mythos is making people pause to say, 'Wait, how much do I need to spend on cyber?' They're holding off on new deals until they have clarity," he explained. Despite these concerns, Krishna reassured that he does not foresee AI disrupting their software offerings. This optimistic outlook contributed to a notable increase in stock prices, with companies like Okta, Netskope, and CrowdStrike each climbing approximately 10%. Meanwhile, SailPoint, Zscaler, and SentinelOne saw gains of around 8%, while Palo Alto Networks rose about 7%.
